An IKEA ANTILOP Footrest Helps With Messy Meals

The IKEA ANTILOP high chair is easy to wipe down, but the dangling legs make meals harder than they need to be. A toddler who cannot plant their feet keeps sliding, twisting, and trying to stand up halfway through dinner.

A simple footrest made the chair much calmer. The useful setup is not complicated:

  • keep both feet supported, not just the toes
  • set the height so the knees are roughly level with the hips
  • check that the board cannot slide out when it gets kicked
  • wipe the footrest with the tray after every meal

I used a piece of scrap wood first to find the right height before buying or cutting anything permanent. That test mattered more than the exact board. Too low and the legs still dangle. Too high and the knees come up into the tray.

The change is most obvious with food that takes time to chew. Rice, pasta, and anything served in small pieces become less of a moving-target exercise. The chair is still going to need wiping. It just stops being a piece of furniture the toddler is actively escaping from.
