Try Radio With An RTL-SDR Dongle

Amateur radio interests me, but a transceiver and license exam are too much commitment for a first experiment. An RTL-SDR USB dongle lets me start by listening.

My first session only needs a Linux laptop, the dongle, and its small antenna:

  • tune a local FM station to confirm the setup works
  • find a NOAA weather broadcast
  • try the aircraft band
  • move the antenna near a window and compare reception
  • save any frequencies worth revisiting

I do not need an amateur license just to receive. After a few sessions, I will know whether I want to study for the license and buy transmitting hardware.
